Idah al-Bab li-Murid al-Nikah bi-l-Sawab

Overview

Popularly known as Bab al-Nikah. This is a work of fiqh and is a translation of a portion of Muhyi al-Din Abu Zakariyya Yahya b. Sharaf al-Nawawi’s (631-76/1233-77) Minhaj al-Talibin (Direction for the Inquirers) and parts of commentaries such as Tuhfat al-Muhtaj (Treasure for the One in Need) by Shihab al-Din Ahmad b. Muhammad Hajr al-Hatimi al-Makki (d. 973/1565), Fath al-Wahhab (The Bounty of the Giver) by Abu Yahya Zakariyya b. Muhammad al-Ansari (824-926/1420-1520), Nihayat al-Muhtaj (The End for the One in Need) by Shams al-Din Abu ‘Abd Allah Ahmad al-Ramli al-Ansari (fl. 9th/15th century), and Hadi al-Muhtaj (The Guide for the One in Need). Al-Nawawi is one of the most respected legal minds within the Shafi madhhab as well as an expert on hadith and therefore Shaykh Daud al-Fatani’s reference to him here was certainly to draw directly from one of the school’s highest authorities.  His extraction is a treatise on Shafi laws of marriage, advice for a successful marriage, and a number of related issues such as dowry and divorce procedures.

Authorship

Completed “malam Isnin, 9 Rabi’ al-awwal 1224 AH” [14 Apr 1809] by Shaykh Daud b. ‘Abd Allah al-Fatani in Mecca.

Manuscripts

This is the single-most-copied book by Shaykh Daud al-Fatani.  It was among the earliest of his works copied and students maintained a steady interest in this text well into the twentieth century.  It somewhat rarely appeared in manuscript compilations that included Shaykh Daud al-Fatani’s other works such as Ghayat al-Taqrib fi al-Irth wa al-Ta‘sib or Kitab Sembahyang Jum’a, but was included more often with works by other scholars of the Patani knowledge network.
