Biographical Details: b. 1280/1863, in Kampung Kelaba Beris. His mother was Mek Nik binti Imam ‘Abd al-Karim. His maternal grandfather was captured by Siam and taken as a slave to Bangkok in the aftermath of the 1832 war. His great-great-grandfather ‘Abd Allah was from Kampung Laut, Kelantan, but moved to Kampung Beris, Kelaba. ‘Abd Allah’s father, ‘Abu Bakr, was from Minangkabau or Java and his father, Zayn al-‘Abidin, was from Khurasan. Zayn al-‘Abidin went to Java and married a woman from Minangkabau. They left Java because of a war and went to the peninsula and died in Kelaba. ‘Abu Bakr moved from there to Kelantan and settled at Kampung Laut. He was friends with Shaykh Da’ud b. Mustafa al-Fatani. d. 4:00 pm Selasa, 21 Sha’ban 1367/1948, at age 85, buried in an Islamic cemetery at the foot of Bukit Selindung Bayu, near masjid Raja Teluban.

He studied with a number of family members and others during his early years, formally attending a pondok in Semela, Patani, 1296-98/1301-3 and afterward at Pondok Bendang Daya. In 1312/1895, he went to Mecca to continue his education. He returned and taught at Kelaba.
