Biographical Details: b. c. 1834, Kampung Sungai Pinang, d. 1934. He had a brother named Abdul Karim. He apparently came from a very poor family of Bugis origins. His father settled at Pulau Celagi (today called Pulau Panjang), near Pengkalan Chepa, in Kelantan, after a dispute with the latter’s brother.

After his early studies near his home, he went to Patani to continue his education. After that, he went to Mecca, where he studied for 7 years. Upon his return, he opened a pondok at Sungai Pinang.
