Biographical Details: b. 1260/1844, in Pulau Duyong Kecil, Kuala Terengganu. His family had fled to Terengganu from Patani. He was the son of Wan ‘Isma’il b. Wan Ahmad b. Wan ‘Idris. His father was known as Shaykh ‘Isma’il Janggut Merah. His mother, Tok Wan Zaynab, was the daughter of Shaykh ‘Idris, the younger brother of Shaykh Da’ud b. ‘Abd Allah al-Fatani. Shaykh Da’ud al-Fatani returned from Mecca around 1845 and adopted him, returning to Mecca the following year (and passing away in 1847, presumably making the young child his heir). d. Sabtu, 20 Rabi al-akhir 1333/1915, in Mecca. His son, Shaykh ‘Abd Allah was also a scholar of some repute.

He primarily studied fiqhtafsir, and ‘usul fiqh. Shaykh Nik Mat Kecik was close friends with Shaykh Wan Muhammad ‘Ali Kutan al-Kalantani. He returned to the peninsula in 1327/8 AH [1909/10 CE] and visited his family and friends in Patani, Terengganu, and Kelantan. In 1329 [1911 CE] he went to Jambu, to Bangkok, and then finally back to Mecca.
